Tee Times & Pairings
We had 24 players in the field up for Friday, October 22, 2021. This is the 13th Event of our Seacoast Christian GC season at The Crossings at Carlsbad GC, Carlsbad, California. Today’s challenge involved an 18 hole challenge which included our last / fifth of 5 “Playoff” events as we come to the end of our golf season. We were all met with cool Fall air temperatures as the groups set off. The light breeze and cloud cover kept the temps in the mid 60’s for most of the round. Golf course conditions of both fairways and greens were excellent. You don’t always have to be long off the tee here, but most important.. giving yourself at a chance to get on the green in regulation is the key. Then making sure your putts are within striking distance to the cup to tap out for par. This course is full of “golf management” challenges and those players who plan and execute their “A” game golf plan will come out as a winner !
Today’s event involved players being matched up in “Match Play” according to their seeded positions on our playoff season leader board. Our top 2 remaining players in the Championship Cup Bracket will square off in the The Finals Championship Match Play playoff. Those players who are in the “Player’s Bracket” will match up to earn 200 points for a winning match. Tie matches will split the points. Also points would be earned in our normal LOW GROSS / LOW NET / LOW NET Skins , as well as pin competitions. Today’s scoring points will be at a season high of 500 for a 1st place position.

SCORE CARD
– Championship Finals Match –
Pre Match Notes: Both players showed up 1 hour before the tee time to warm up their swings at the range and to get in some putting practice on the putting greens. A sense of nervousness could be detected as each player was concentrating on what was to happen. Ebin divulged that he’d been working on a slight swing change for the past 4 weeks and was deciding this week if he was going to commit to this change in today’s round. Ted reports that he’s just happy to get to the finals once again, and hopes he gets the breaks that he’s owed from the golf course. He feels good about his swing and has been working on “consistency” in striking his short irons. He’s as ready as can be. Both players have held the cup in year’s past and both know that it takes to be a champion. This match will be tough to call as both players have great potential to win. It’s going to be a battle of who can minimize their mistakes and who can overcome “pressure cooker” golf.
Recap : Ted Clinite (+1) vs. Ebin Smith
Hole #1 – Both players showed pre match nervousness on the tee box. Ebin took honors to tee off first and blasted his first shot down the fairway leaving himself 137 yards to the green.. Ted hits a solid tee shot but his ball slices right and finds the right fairway bunker leaving himself 158 yards to the hole. Taking a “Covid 19” sand bunker relief, he nails a perfect shot that lands pin high just 15 feet from the cup. Ebin takes out his PW and solidly hits his shot, but a slight breeze takes his shot and the ball lands long past the pin and settles into the secondary fringe cut. Ebin chips out and leaves his ball 8 feet from the cup. Ted lips out his birdie attempt and leaves a 1 footer for par. Ebin misses his par saving putt and has to settle for bogey. Ted taps out for par and wins the first hole. Clinite 1UP
Hole #2 – Both players hit solid straight shots off the tee leaving about 135 yards to the cup. Ted cleanly hits a 9 iron to get his ball to land 12 feet from the cup. Ebin uses his 56 degree PW and also lands his ball 15 feet from the cup. Both players almost sink their birdie attempts but settle for tap in pars. Clinite 1UP
Hole #3 – Ted solidly hits his drive safely to the right and leaves a long shot to the green from 180 yards. Ebin takes his driver out and and crushes his ball straight down the middle .. but lands in the fairway bunker that spits the right upper and lower left fairways to the green. Ted pulls out his utility 4W put lands his approach shot 20 yards short of the green. Ebin manages to solidly hit a difficult sand shot out of the bunker from 148 yards and lands 3 yards off the green. Both players are unable to get up and down and both settle for tap in bogeys. Clinite 1 UP
Hole #4 – The Par 3 hole is determined to be 169 yards from the tee box. Ebin takes out his 6 iron and flushes it clean to land 15 feet above the cup. Ted takes aim with his hybrid 4W but ends up a bit short off the green. Ted leaves his chip shot short of the cup leaving a long 10 footer par attempt. Ebin carefully sizes up his birdie attempt and successfully hits his line with perfect speed to sink his putt to win the hole. Match TIED / ALL SQUARE
Hole #5 – Both players skillfully launch their drives to the fairway. Ebin places his 2nd fairway shot with his 3W to within 102 yards to the pin. Ted hits his fairway shot leaving himself 130 yards to the cup. Ted takes out his 9 iron and perfectly hits his ball to 4 feet from the pin. Ebin elects to take SW and hits his shot long as it lands pin high and takes a hard bounce forward leaving a lengthy 18 footer downhill back to the cup. Ebin misjudges the speed of the green with his downhill putt and his ball passes by the cup leaving 5 feet for par. He again misses the comebacker and shakes his head as he scores a bogey. Ted calmly lines up his birdie putt and confidently knocks his putt into the hole to take the lead again. Clinite 1UP
Hole #6 – This hole is the only “Stroke” hole for Ted as it’s the #1 handicap hole. Ted takes aim with his driver and successfully puts it down the middle of the fairway leaving 178 yards to the green. Ebin realizes he doesn’t want to go right where there is the nature hazard. Ebin’s drive is long and pulled left way onto the hillside near the maintenance building. After accessing his shot, Ebin does have a clear shot at the green from 186 yards. Ebin hits his shot thinking it will land somewhere pin high or beyond, but the ball lands short of the green into the left sand bunker. Ted is elated as he knocks his hybrid 4W onto the green leaving a 40 foot putt. Ebin takes aim from the bunker in attempts to get his ball close, but his ball flies hard and long 40 feet past the cup and stops in the 2nd cut of grass off and above the green. Ebin immediately gasps with disgust and explains that the sand had “concrete” bottom ..causing his ball to sail. Ebin collects himself and does his best to get up and down but has to settle for bogey. Ted methodically 2 putts his ball for a par (net birdie) to win the hole . Clinite 2 UP
Hole #7 – Ted now fills a bit of relief and feels he’s settling in into this match. Momentum is going his way and his last few holes have been quite successful. He grabs his driver and masterfully strikes a beautiful drive down the middle of the fairway. Ebin still dusting off the pain of losing two holes consecutively knows he’s got to “stop the bleeding” and takes his 3 Wood driver knowing he just needs a shot to be in the fairway. The extra added pressure on his drive showed up as his drive sails long and tails right 10 yards right of the fairway on the very hilly right side. Both players know this hole well and successfully hit “lay up” shots. Ebin’s second shot gets to 117 yards to the hole. Ted lands his layup to 96 yards to hole. Both players size up their shots as they face the water hazard that protects this hole. Any short shots will bring penalizing trouble. Ebin decides to hit sand wedge and after hitting immediately realizes he mis-hits as he watches his ball drop into the water. Shaking his head Ebin takes a penalty drop as he now hitting is 5h shot. . He again takes aim and mis-hits and puts his fifth as it also lands short of the green and back into the water. Ted sees that Ebin again has troubles and takes a deep breath as he knows he must keep his ball dry. He calms himself by taking a deep breath and executes his short game shot to precision and lands his approach to 10 feet from the cup. Ebin realizes he’s out of the hole but hits his 7th shot to the green and ends up 2 putting for a “9” on the hole. Ted easily two putts for a par and another WIN. Clinite 3 UP
Hole #8 – Clinite now feels a bit of control of the match, he calmly pulls out his hybrid and fires his tee shot 170 yards down the short fairway. Ebin realizing he needs to get his game in gear, nails his 6 iron drive down the fairway leaving himself 106 yards to the hole. Clinite’s second shot to the green falls short on the grassy apron on the fringe cut 15 yards from the cup. Ebin also takes aim but also comes out short of the green. Both players require a great chip to save par. Ebin goes first and perfectly places his chip to within 2 feet of the cup. Ted slightly “chunks” his chip leaving a lengthy 30 footer for a save. Ted miss reads the slope ends up 3 putting the green for a bogey while Ebin taps out for his par finally giving himself a win. Clinite 2 UP
Hole #9 – Ebin takes a deep breath. At least he’s stop some of the bleeding that’s taken over this match. Ebin measures up the short par 3 (105 yard) hole. His SW iron shot catches some prevailing wind gusts and lands 15 feet short of the pin. Clinite sees that he needs to get on green and feels the wind pick up as it blows into his face. Ted pulls out his PW and hits it solidly. Ted’s ball gets engulfed into the gusty wind and sails past the cup leaving 30 feet to the pin. Ted calmly regroups his thoughts and realizes he needs to putt his ball close to tap out for par. He recognizes the slight right to left break, but doesn’t account for the slight uphill slope of the green. He executes his putt…it takes the roll and stops 8 feet short of the cup, leaving a very testing par save putt. Ebin confidently putts his birdie attempt and lips out but is able to tap out for a conceded par. Ted now is pressed to make his par, but does not hit his line and misses his par putt. Ebin wins the hole to reduce Ted’s lead. Clinite 1 UP
Hole #10 – Realizing there are only 9 holes left to determine the winner, both players stood nervously on the tee box . Each has given their best to this point. Ted had a 3 UP substantial lead but it now has been reduced to just 1 UP. Momentum was in favor of Ted, but somehow Ebin has been able to “upright” his sinking ship and now he has 9 holes to make some noise. The difficult #10 hole demands a perfectly straight drive and both players are able to do so. Getting up and down for both is no problem and with the pin tucked way in the back, both players were more than happy to make their pars and move onto the next hole. Clinite 1 UP
Hole #11 – The extreme downhill driving hole makes this hole always interesting. Both players know the “woes” of this hole and where difficulty lies. Both players execute drives to give them each a chance to attack the hole. Ebin flushes a straight drive to put him 133 yards to the front cup position. Ted solidly hits his drive but his ball slightly draws left to nestle down into the hillside rough just off the fairway leaving 168 yards to the hole. Ted goes first and doesn’t strike his 5 iron to perfection and his ball lands wide right towards the cart path. Ebin takes PW and drops in with 15 feet left for birdie. Ted tries his best to get back into play with the need for a spectacular 75 yard shot, but it lands short of the green. Ted then proceeds to finally get his ball on the green on his 4th shot, but its too late. The double bogey score doesn’t size up to Ebin’s tap in par. TIE MATCH
Hole #12 – Both players now are in the heat of the battle. Clinite realizes that he’s given up 2 holes to Ebin by his poor play. All he needs to do is hit decent shots and he’s back into the match. Ebin formalizes his “back 9” strategy as he takes the long cart drive to the 12th hole tee box. All he can think to himself “fairways / green / fairway / green”…if he can put this into action he will do fine. Standing on the tee box, Ted focuses on his drive shot, and gets off a 230 yard drive down the left side of the fairway. Ebin takes out his driver and strikes his shot perfectly as it flies 280 yards off the tee. Both players know the toughness of this hole. Approach shots must not be short and left. They must be right on or long. Ted takes out his hybrid and puts his ball long past the hole into deep rough next to the small tree. Ebin selects his SW and successfully lands onto the green 20 feet from the cup. Ted is unable to get up and down and doesn’t get into the cup on his bogey attempt and posts a “surprise” double bogey. Ebin methodically employs his putting routine and taps out for par. Ebin wins the hole. . Smith 1 UP
Hole #13 – This next short par 4 hole sets up players for the rest of their round. Fairways and greens is a must to find success on this hole. Both players know that with 6 holes left, the battle is fully on. Whoever makes a mistake may end their “Championship Trophy” hopes. Both players use their skill and experience and nail their drives down the open fairway leaving a short iron to the cup. Ebin is positioned 122 yards to the cup and hits a knock down PW. Taking into account downwind help, he lands the ball short 38 feet from the cup that is positions towards the middle-back of the green.. Ted also trying to figure out the wind issues, he swings his short iron approach shot and also hits short of the pin leaving a long putt from 30 feet. Ebin putts first and skillfully hits the right line and speed as his ball barely misses the lip and rolls 2 feet by the cup. Ted is not as fortunate and misjudges the speed and putts short leaving 8 feet for par. Ted misses his par save and settles for bogey. Ebin lines up his short putt and finds the bottom of the cup for par and takes another win. Smith 2 UP
Hole #14 – With a “2 Up” lead, Ebin feels the confidence he was hoping to have as he knew the last 5 holes would be crucial in the match. With the pin placed in the front of the green, the hole only measures 93 yards. Skillful short games skills would be needed by both competitors. Both players take out their short irons and perfectly place their tee shots 10 feet from the hole. Neither are successful in birdie attempts and pars are both scored. Smith 2 UP
Hole #15 – This difficult and tricky par 5 demands the best of any golfer. The tee shot is crucial, and the 2nd shot “lay up” is the key to scoring. Ebin, feeling confident from his 2 up lead, grabs his 3W and perfectly hits his ball to the middle of the fairway, short of the sand bunker. Ted collects himself realizing that he has to get the momentum back into his corner. He frames in his mind the shot he needs and hits a solid tee short with his driver. But the ball fails to draw as much as he desired and it finds the middle of the fairway right bunker.. Ebin goes next and decides to hit a long layup shot with his 6 iron…knowing that he only needs 170-175 yards for a layup behind the wood fence area.…but he flushes his layup shot and the ball sails strongly down the fairway and takes a very hard bounce towards the fence. Ebin gasps as he realizes his ball is headed to go into the hazard. As he watches his balls fate, surprisingly his ball hits the fence and nestles right at the base of the post…the ball is unbelievably safe from the hazard. Ted seeing this shakes his head as Ebin just got a lucky break. Ted now has to lay up from the bunker. He knows he must advance his ball towards the fence and short of the creek side hazard. He takes a deep breath and perfectly hits a solid shot that gets out of the bunker and lands 15 yards short of the hazard. Ebin takes free relief from the hazard wood fence and realizes he’s only 132 yards to the hole. Ted also finds his successful layup just 138 yards . Both players hit great approach shots as if they were on tour. Their shots land like precision onto the green leaving very makeable birdie putts within 20 feet. With the difficult green pin placement, both players were not able to make birdie, but settled for a tap in pars. Smith 2 UP
Hole #16 – Sizing up the situation, Ted now realizes that he must make a move to get back into this match. After seeing Ebin get a “lucky” break on the previous hole and able to come out with a par, Ted focuses on the next par 5. Knowing a straight long drive sets one up for success he envisions the shot he needs. Ebin, seeing that Ted is going to have to take chances to get back into the match, elects to keep driver in the bag and he takes out his TaylorMade 3W which has served him well this past season. He takes aim and hits a very smooth straight shot down the middle of the fairway. Ted digs deep and with his M6 TaylorMade he hits a solid drive which sails 20 yards past Ebin’s ball onto the right side of fairway. Both players lay up to get their balls into position for the attack shot to the green . Ebin and Ted again execute to perfection their short game skills and place their third shorts within 25 feet of the hole. Again, both players miss their birdie attempts and tap out for par. Ted needed to birdie badly. Ebin protects his lead. Smith 2 UP
Hole #17 – The match is now elevated to another level of pressure as both players realize that “all is now on the line.” This hole #17 par 3 now becomes an “all of nothing” hole. Ted is now in a ‘Must Win” situation or else his championship trophy hopes are all gone. Both players realize that this par 3 hole requires careful calculation and skillful execution of the shot that is necessary to score. With wind conditions stirring up, both players know that the deep drop factor to the green along with wind conditions most likely cancel out each other. With the pin being placed on the lower right side of the large green, going for the hole is a bit gutsy for most players, as any slight fade shot can end up in the right side hazard. This hole is quite the challenge. Ebin goes first and perfectly hits his 8 iron to find the middle left side of the green. Ted sensing the pressure of what it takes to get the ball close does his best to calm his nerves. He takes a deep breath twice and swings his 7 iron. Ted’s ball immediately penetrates the win, but begins to take a hook draw flight and finds the far left side of the green and bounces 3 feet off into the 2nd cut leaving a tricky 80 foot chip shot to the cup. Ted now senses that his chances of winning the hole have diminished greatly. He still does his best to chip to the hole, but leaves the ball 15 feet short of the hole. Ebin, feeling good about his game for the last 7 holes, knows this putt and speed, and delivers a putt that grazes the edge of the hole leaving 2 feet for par. Ted unfortunately misses his 8 footer to save par and taps out for bogey. Ebin methodically lines up his putt and sinks his par…with a big smile on his face, he looks up as Ted walks in and shakes Ebin’s hand. The two great sportsman hug each other and Ted says “Congratulations Ebin…you surely deserve this great win today !” Ebin Smith Wins 3 and 1
Hole #18 – Since the match was complete, both players had a sigh of relief as they could let there guard down and let all the golf pressure go. Ted makes par. Ebin settles for a bogey. Both players congratulate each other on a successful golf season. Today Ebin becomes the new 2021 Seacoast Cup Champion !!
Ebin Smith – 2021 Seacoast Cup Champion
Post Match Interviews: Ted Clinite was given the opportunity to speak to the media after the round and he politely explained “I was ready to play today as all season my game has been consistent. I had confidence that all I needed to do today was make the shots that I’m used to making. My putting has been pretty ‘spot on’ all month and I felt very solid with my putter. Knowing that Ebin has been playing well only gave me more zeal to play my best. Today it was going good until I made 2 consecutive bogeys on #8 and 9 and let Ebin right back in. Then going into the back 9 I lost the momentum when I didn’t play my game and didn’t par out #11-13. Ebin took advantage of this and that was the difference today. He played steady and kept making great chips and putts all at the right time. Ebin surely played like a champion today and deserved the win. I’m happy for him…but I’ll be back next year !”
Ebin was found smiling ear to ear when we finally caught up with him to ask him about his thoughts about his win today…“I’m so happy to get back to the winner’s circle again and to be able to put my name back on this Championship Trophy. I’ve worked so hard these past 2 years to get this opportunity and today my hard work and efforts have paid off. I can only thank Ted for being such a gracious and kind competitor today. I know he had to make some pressure putts and had some unlucky breaks, but he kept his head up high and tried his best to unravel me today. Ted didn’t have his “A” game in full swing today … but I’ll take the win . I know I was the “lucky” guy who somehow got a chance to get into the playoffs (thanks to Kent Coykendall), but I made the best of my opportunities these past 3 rounds and made the best of it. Ted is a standup guy and a past champ, but today I’m so happy to be able to hoist this trophy again. Playing Ted has extra added pressure elements as he’s a competitive player and usually doesn’t make many mistakes. I had to play my own game today and do what it takes. I did get a few breaks that went my way…but that’s how competitive golf goes…I’m overwhelmed that I won today… tell Ted that I’ll be waiting for him again…I’m sure of it….”

2021 Championship Consolation Match
(battle for 3rd Place)
Recap: Johnny Li vs. John Casey (+5) –
Both players brought their best game for the day and at times showed their great golf skills. But there were times when small mistakes in judgement and execution costs the players a win on a hole. By the time the front nine was finshed, each player had their chances of getting a lead, but it was ALL SQUARE / TIE by the end of the front nine. On hole #10 John Casey made a crucial triple bogey to allow Johnny to gain some momentum. Johnny was able to par 4 of 5 holes going into hole #15 to get a commanding 3 Up lead. Then on hole #15 John Casey was able to regroup his game and took advantage of Johnny’s blunder when he scored a double bogey. Johnny began to feel the pressure as his 3 Up lead went to 2 Up. With another par 5 facing the competitors, hole #16 took its toll again. Johnny somehow lost control of his golf management skills and sprayed some shots to suddenly add up his score to a NINE ! Casey didn’t fully see his opportunity and almost followed Johnny’s big score but managed to keep his score to “Ocho” (8). With that the match became a “pressure cooker’ match. After both players took a sigh of relief, they now faced the difficult #17 hole par 3. Johnny was unable to keep his ball on track and again floundered again with a triple. Casey somehow dug deep and managed to score a bogey for a needed win to TIE the match with only one hole to go. As they stood on the final #18 tee box, both players realized that it was all on the line . Johnny internalized that he had to let the past poorly played holes out of his head. He realized that he had given John Casey an early Christmas Gift by not playing well. John couldn’t believe he was now in contention to possibly win the match after being 3 down with 4 holes to play. Both players wished each other “good luck” and thy let their drives fly. Johnny was able to get a favorable drive to have a chance at the green. John Casey also dug deep and got his ball to be within striking distance of the green. Both players successfully played as if they were on tour, getting their second shots onto the green. Johnny failed to make his birdie putt. John also missed his 3rd shot but tapped in for par. Johnny also pars out but with John’s “stroke” hole on #18, John was able to post a “Net Birdie” to WIN the hole and the match. What a battle as it all ended up to be a ONE HOLE battle.
John Casey WINS 1 UP
Post Match Interviews: Johnny was asked as to what happened today on the course…. “I can’t believe what happened to me on the back nine. I had a 3 Up lead with only 4 holes left. But I somehow got out of sink and played “ugly” golf on those par 5’s …that really took a toll and allowed John to get back inot the match. I kind of gave him the opportunity to climb back into the match and he took advantage of this to take it on hole #18. He really played well at the end and he did what it took to win. I’m kind of disappointed in myself that I played poorly but I’ll have to regroup and get ready for next year. I had a great time competing this year…but just came out a bit short.
John Casey shared his thoughts on today’s match “Today I cant’ believe I pulled off a win. I was watching Johnny play so well on holes #10 -14….he was not making any mistakes. I was trying to get back into the match after he got a 3 up lead..but I realized that my chances were dwindling …but then somehow he started to make mistakes. He was opening door after door for me to get back…and I almost blew it…but somehow I climbed back into the match to take it to the last hole. I can’t believe I putted out for par (net birdie) on #18 as this hole is almost tough for me. I know Johnny is a great competitor and that he should have won this match today…but that’s what happens in “Match Play”….I’ll take the win !”
