We had a great day at Arrowood GC, in Oceanside, California for our 12th event of our 2023 golf season.   A smaller field of 24  golfers showed up on this beautiful morning with our perfect southern California weather.   Players got to the practice range early to warm up their swings, and you could find all 4 of our semi finalist hitting balls to perfection.  The air was filled with tension as our 2 groups in the Championship Seacoast Cup 2023 bracket knew that only 2 players would be able to move on.
Today there were no new players playing with our group and there were several “scratches” to our field which originally was 29 players.  Due to the smaller field, the golf committee re arranged the groupings so that all groups ended up in “threesomes’ for the day.  Thank you all for your understanding and patience in this matter.  All those players that had original “Match Play” opponents who were not present in your grouping were either re assigned a match play opponent or your match would be decided in a “card off” decision.
Any of you player’s who have been getting notice that your SCGA membership is needing renewal, here is the link.

2023 Semi Finals – TOP 4

The Following matchups consists of the 4 players who have qualified to continue on in our 2023 Seacoast Cup Championships.  Winners of their matches would earn 400 points.  These Top 4 players have worked hard this season to show up for our events and posting great low golf scores throughout the season to earn as many points as they can.  Also winning early in the “Playoffs” has earned them big point to get them to this event.

Today our TOP4 Semi Finalists played “Match Play” in addition to our regular “Low Net / Low Gross” scoring, plus Net Skins and pin competition to earn points towards their season golf totals.  These “2023 Championship Semi Finalist” would also compete in their Matches for 400 points which would be earned for a WIN.  A Win would help take them to the Championship Finals.

In MATCH 1Smith vs. Miller (+25)  /  Ebin Smith (hcp 5)  took on the “Cinderella kid” from Rancho Monserate, our 82 year old Bill Miller (hcp 28),  who has shown some golf skills these past 2 months.  Ebin has been quite steady all year maintaining and evening improving his single digit handicap status.  Playing a few times a week has gained him confidence and over powering skills to conquer tough golf courses around the county.  But today, Ebin met his match.  Bill has been steady in going about his game and striving to play to his “golf ability” having a 25 stroke  allotment today from Ebin.  The match started off with Ebin taking on the first hole as he survived a bogey and Miller had to putt out with a triple.  But then, Miller keep steady and kept away from  “blow up holes” and was able hang in there with his given strokes and was able to take  a “3 up”  lead by the end of nine.  Ebin knew he had to make pars and birdies to get the momentum back in his favor, but even though he was doing so, Miller did some “golf magic” on his own and put down shots that scored him “net pars” to tie and win a few more holes.  By the time the players got to hole 14, Bill closed out the match at 5 and 4 and could believe he took down another low handicap player during these Seacoast Cup 2023 Championship Finals.

In MATCH 2 Crocket vs. Riggs (+4)  / , both players have been playing steady all year, earning their way into the playoff season with solid accumulated points.  Now that “Match Play” playoffs is here, it a matter of who can handle the pressure.  Riggs who has shown signs of steadiness and ability to handle golf “match play pressure” in earlier rounds in the past month,  had a rough start and he couldn’t find a way to “par” or evening “bogey” a hole.  By the time they got to hole #6, Scott Crocket grabbed himself an early 4 Up lead.  But then Riggs finally made the adjustments and won a hole on #6 to “stop the bleeding.”  But Crockett kept pressing and  by the end of nine he regained the 4 Up lead.    After the turn, Scott realized he only needed to match John’s play for a couple more holes, and that’s exactly what he did, giving no room for John to dig into the lead.  By the time they got to hole #14, Scott had the match at 5 and 4.  Both players shook hands and realized that the course took its toll today, and John ended up on the short end of the stick by leaving his “A” game at home today.  A big smile could be visibly seen in the clubhouse snack bar area on Scott Crocket’s face as he realized he is now going to “The Finals !”

In our “Player’s Cup” bracket, the rest of the field today were paired up in their “post season line up order” based on the Leader Board position.  Players would also be able to compete in “match play” but would earn 150 points for a Winning match.   Players all came out with eagerness and anticipation to play their best, but some player fell short and got the “crush” of Native Oaks as many holes here can “crush” your game and emotions about this game.

Congratulations to those who found success today in their game and were able to move up the leaderboard.  There are 2 more events left to see if you can make it to the upper levels to prove you can be the “2023 Player’s Cup” champion.

Group Pics for the day

Seacoast Cup 2023 Championship RecapBill Miller played another solid round and was able to get a Match Play Win over Ebin Smith.  Of course this was a Championship Playoff upset and kept Bill Miller’s playoff hope alive.  Scott Crocket played another solid steady round and took care of business to get himself a spot in the Championship Finals.  Our 2023 Seacoast Cup Match Play Championship is now set:  Scott Crocket vs. Bill Miller

Recap Event 12 – With our 12th  event in the books, our players enjoyed a challenging day of golf  at Arrowood GC.   This great golf course will tested player’s ability to stay in play and to appropriately make good decisions on golf management skills.  Those who unwisely took risks, and didn’t make “the shot” paid dearly with many added penalty strokes, as this course can “eat you alive!”….and then comes “The Quandary”

Other Notables:

The “Dahle” boys had a great time together.  Byron / Rhett / Reece – 3 generations of golfers !!  What a nice family outing.  Byron who is 87 years old, continues to swing his clubs and still strives to improve his game.  At the last outing with our group at Native Oaks GC it should be noted that “Lord” Byron posted on his scorecard a low gross “87” which matches his age.  CONGRATULATIONS Byron…a feat very few golfers get to achieve !!!

Steve Knorr fired off a great round today Low Gross 87 / Low Net 63….we have not seen him in the past few events, but he reports that we went down to Mexico for a trip and got to play golf several times.  For some reason, his swing took on a new dimension and today he was able to display his “A” game !  Way to go Steve !!!..keep the fantastic play going !!

Player’s Bracket News for 2023 –      Ted Clinite, who dropped out of Championship contention, now leads the leaderboard in the “Player’s Cup” bracket.  Very close behind is Rhett Dahle who is within reach of taking the honor.  Several other players are in the hunt for the 2023 Player’s Cup Winner as we now close into our final competition for our season.  The following players are all in contention, should they have a great day on the golf course at our next event on October 20, 2023 at The Crossings at Carlsbad.

How to earn “Playoff Points” – our same format will be played with Low Gross / Low Net with all remaining events.  The added feature to the playoffs is that each player will be matched up in “MATCH PLAY” to earn extra playoff points.  For Rounds 1 and Round 2, ALL players are able to participate to earn “Championship Points” that will be added to player’s season totals.    It is only when we get to the 3rd round of our playoffs, will the CUT line be established.  Those players who have sufficient points will to to the next round in the “Championship Bracket.”  All other players will continue to compete, but will compete in the “Player’s Brackets.”

Here’s the calendar of events for this year so you can plan accordingly.
