News and Results – Event 12 “Seacoast Cup Playoffs” – TOP 4 Semi Finals Round – Arrowood GC
Welcome to the 12th golf event of the 2018 Seacoast Cup Golf Tour. Our October 19 tour stop takes us to Arrowood GC. This challenging course a definite tournament favorite as it demands the best from golfers. This course sets up to make any match play experience a true nail biter and thriller. This course for our golf group has historically set up favorably for our post season match play events. Today’s event is the fourth post season “playoff” event that takes us to the end of the road towards the 2018 Seacoast Cup Championship. Those players who have earned their Top 4 spot will continue to compete in “match play” format to earn the remaining post season “BIG” points. Winners will earn 750 points and a spot in the 2018 Seacoast Cup Championship Finals. Those players who did not qualify for the ” Championship Bracket”, will enjoy match play format in the “Player’s Bracket” and will also compete for points to determine our 2018 Player’s Cup Champion.
The majority of the field of players found their way to the range to get off some early swings to warm up. Our media photography crew was on hand to take photos and to get some early interview from some of the key match ups.
Some Match Highlights –
PRE MATCH NOTES:
Match #1 Clinite vs. Thistle , a battle of two seasoned match play players. Both Ted and Rik have made it deep into the playoffs over the years, but Rik has not yet won the cup. Both players have steady games, but Rik may have the slight advantage as he is the recipient of 8 strokes today. Rik has been fairly steady over the golf season and has proven to be able to post low net scores. If Rik plays his game without making too many blunders, he can prove he is worthy to be a champion today. Ted has also proven to be a steady, single digit handicap player who doesn’t make too many mistakes during his round. His work today is going to be tough, but Ted somehow always finds a way to be there at the end of the match.
Match #2 Smith vs. Deveau, both players have their eyes on making it into the finals. Ebin Smith will have to give Paul Deveau six stroke in today’s round. This match could be a nail biter as both player’s golf trends are peaking and their recent scores show steady improvements in both their games. Our media team did some investigating and learned that Ebin had been playing extra rounds and was seen practicing at Arrowood GC last week. Paul Deveau was also seen playing a practice round with some buddies last week. Both players admit that they have never felt better about their games…. and so the stage has been set for a great match

Recap of Match 1: Clinite def. Thistle 5 and 4
Both players were a bit stiff on the first few holes, but Thistle gave up a few easy ties and enabled Ted to gain the early lead. By the end of 8 holes, Ted had a 3 up lead and Rik tried his best to stay in the match. But after the 12th hole, any miscue on Rik’s game would be a dagger to end the match. Rik’s golf game wasn’t steady and the missed putts and misguided tee shots kept digging a deeper hole. Ted stayed on point and his focus kept his scoring low and as he kept the pars going, the match finally ended before the 15th hole began. Ted played right to his liking and he ended any surge that Rik had in store for today’s match.
Recap of Match 2: Deveau def. Smith 1 UP
This match started out strong in Paul Deveau’s favor as he continued his great ball striking extravaganza. Ebin had a tough time matching Pauls’s play, but was able to keep the match within reach. By the time the front nine was complete, Paul had a 2 UP lead. But has he started to recap his nice play on the front nine, Ebin started to pull out his winning putts and before the 11th hole ended, Ebin had the match ALL SQUARED up. There was a sea saw / back and forth momentum shift as both players realized the gravity of the last 6 holes. By the 17 hole, Paul had barely hung onto his 1 UP lead. On the 18th hole, Paul stood his ground and muscled out a bogey out of the bunker. Ebin had a chance to win the last hole to take the match into a sudden death winner take all…but his 15 foot putt didn’t break into the hole and his tap in bogey meant his 2018 quest for the Championship Cup came to an end. Paul pulled off a great win and was able to put another great day of golf on his score card today.
2018 Player’s Cup Bracket : We had 20 players additional players come out in match play format to compete in our “Player’s Bracket.” All players who do not qualify for the Championship Cup bracket can come out and participate in our post season match play events. The season totals of points from the regular season roll into the playoff post season points. Players who are knocked out of the Championships Cup division slide into the Player’s Cup division up until the Semi Finals. Several players who did not make it into this year’s Championship Cup bracket surely made some noise this week and racked up “big time” post season points to make a charge at being the “Players Cup Champion.” Here are the results below:

Our Top 2 players are now positioned to continue on in the Championship Cup Finals which is scheduled on Friday, November 2, 2018… this will be our 5th Playoff event of the post season. Our two finalist, Ted Clinite and Paul Deveau will battle it out for the 2018 Championship Cup.The two players who came up short in the Semi Finals will battle it out for 3rd place. The rest of the field will play in the Player’s Bracket and compete for 250 points. The tournament committee has determined that players who are within 600 points of the top player in the Player’s Cup division will have a chance to unseed this player and has a chance to take this top spot. So by winning their next match and posting a low gross / low net score one will be able to climb the ladder and stake their mark at becoming the next Player’s Cup 2018 Champion. Curtis Chan has earned the top spot in the Player’s bracket as we go into the last playoff event, but John Riggs has a chance to take the spot should he win the match and score well. Stay tuned….
