Event 10a – Results – Friday, October 14 –The Golf Club of California  GC – “Top 4 – Semi Finals”  Seacoast Cup playoff round

Welcome to the 12th event of our golf season !   Today we held our 4th playoff post season round.  Our top 4 remaining players who survived the “quarter finals” round are now set for the battle to see who will make it to the Championship Finals.  Here’s who in contention for the 2016 Seacoast Championship Cup:

Match 1

match-1

Player Notes:

Kent Coykendall – a previous champion of the Seacoast Champion Cup (2012, 2010) …he took a year off from golf last season, but this year he has put his attention on reclaiming the cup.  His game is sound as he has mantained a single digit handicap for the past year.  He almost lost his quarter final match to Curtis Chan, but pulled out a win on the 18th hole .  Once he gets on a roll, he’s hard to beat.

Scott Jordan – a steady “lefty” golfer who is hungry to hoist The Cup.  He has slowly made his way into the playoff picture these past 2 years.  His “sneaky” way of hanging around in match play makes him a very challenging player to contend with.  If his drives hit their mark, he’ll be a tough to beat.  His game continues to improve and he’s taking down his monthly golf index to the lower teens.  He’s been focusing on his short game and it has proven to be a secret weapon in his playoff season.

Match 2

match-2

Ebin Smith – has been working hard on his playoff season game.  Now that he sees the pathway to getting to the Championship finals, he is more than eager to keep winning in playoff match play.   Ebin has been steadily working out the imperfections of his golf game and has seen great improvements in his play.  His monthly index reflex all the hard work his has put into his game.  Over the past 8 months he has gone from a 15 to a 10 monthly index.  His focus on playing well will surely make him a challenge.

Peter Andrew – has been once again a Seacoast golfer who has skillfully managed his way deep into the playoffs.  Peter is not a newcomer to this position as he has been a past winner (2013 Champion).   He has been devoting extra time into his short game.   For a man of his age, his ability to drive it long down the fairways is quite amazing.  Peter is a tough competitor on the course and “match play” format suites his game.  He may have a bad hole here and there, but he’ll always be around in the end.   He has been known for his “flashy” bright golf attire which in someways elevates his level of play during playoff golf season.

The Golf Club of California GC provided us a great beautiful day of golf with accommodating fairways, and receptive greens.    Although tight in many spots, our top players navigated the course to edge out their match play wins.   It was a tough day for some…but those who played it smart today, and kept their focus on hitting the right shots at the right time, surely made a way into the win column.   Our top 2 players emerged after their matches today to move into the Championship Finals.   In the “Player’s Bracket” several heated battles took play to see who could earn as many points to earn top bidding honors to become the  “Player’s Cup” champion.  With just 2 events remaining only a few players have a chance of taking this top spot.

A Big Congratulations to our winners:

Low Gross Winners

Flight A – Ted Clinite  (78)

Flight B –  Curtis Chan  (93)

Flight C –  Bill Abrell  (99)

Low Net Winner

       Ted Clinite   (68)

match1aMatch 1 notes
:  Coykendall vs. Jordan:   With great anticipation, both players got off to a poor start as they both drove their beginning drives into the right rough.  Scott had difficulties moving his ball to the green, but Kent expertly placed his next shot onto the green to save a bogey and a 1 Up Win.   The next hole Scott came back with a par on his own to ALL SQUARE the match.  Then Scott went onto to scoring frenzy as Kent tried everyting to settle his game.  By the end of nine holes, Scott found himself with a comfortable 4 UP lead.  Kent continued to struggle off the tee and found himself scoring several bogey/double bogey holes …adding more to the struggles of his day.  Scott stayed poised and played to his golf potential and by the end of hole 16, Kent had to come to grips that this day wasn’t going to get him back to The Cup.  Both players shook hands as Scott smiled broadly as he now has made it to the big dance.

Match 2

Match 2 notes:  Smith vs. Andrew :   Both players were reported to have practiced diligently for the past 2 weeks for this match.  It would all come down to who would be able to deliver a great game today and play to their best potential.   It all started with both players hitting shots to perfection off the first tee, and both ending up with pars.  Then on hole #2, Ebin struck first by taking advantage of Peter’s missed hits which score him a quad…and Ebin calming tapped out for par giving him the 1 UP lead.  Peter seemed to be unsettled from this early round blunder of having an early “blow up” hole.   By the time Peter settled in for this 2nd par of the day, it was already hole #8 and Ebin had by then taken a 3 Up Lead in the match.  But Peter then held his own and scored a bogey (net par) on the difficult hole #9 to cut the deficit to Ebins 2 Up lead.  Ebin took the back 9 more seriously and fired at the pin on #10 to eventually score a birdie to Win the hole, despite Peter’s great efforts at scoring a par.  Sensing some momentum, Ebin enhanced his match play score by taking hole #11 for a 3 UP lead.  Peter having been in this situation, felt he just had to play his game and came back with a win on #12 to climb back to within two.  Both players battled it out for several more holes but by hole #16, Ebin had carved out another hole to gain a 3 UP lead to close Peter out.  Ebin kept to his game plan and will now go to the Final Championship !

Post Match Interviews:

In the post match interview room, Peter explained, I just couldn’t shake off my poor play today.  I really thought I had it after the first hole.  But then when I took a “9” on hole #2 I really had to reevaluate my game.  I’ve been working on keeping out of “double bogey” territory, but I found myself there several times today.  That won’t get the job done.  Ebin was the better player today, and I witnessed his zeal for the game today.  I wish him the best.  He played like a champion today !”

Kent Coykedall was kind of enough to stay for a few minutes to discuss his round today...”I really started out in a bad way.  My driving today was an indication of what transpired today throughout my round…’all over the place’..  When I squeaked out the bogey on #1 and a win, I thought that today I’m going to have a great day.  But then on hole#2,  I got a rude awakening when my bogey didn’t help my cause.  Scott was keeping his game in tact most of the day.  I think he only had 2 blow up holes, and even when he had some bogey/double bogey holes, I was there right with him…not taking advantage of my opportunities.  I really missed a bunch of shots that I usually feel confident with.  But when you get behind like I did, it’s hard to press and catch up.   Scott really put the pressure on me and I just couldn’t turn it around today.  I gave it a good run.  I’m going to have to think it over hard the next few days…I took a break from competitive golf last year, and thought that I’d make a big return this year…but I just came up short…I’m kind of sad that I let myself down today….Oh well…there’s always next year …”

Quest for the 2016 Seacoast Cup– This year will be been full of fun times on the golf course.  We have added a new dimension to our club’s monthly event play by having Match Play events beginning September 2016.  Twenty players will earn their way to this year’s match play event.  Points are earned by finishing well in both individual low gross and low net score postings.  Also points are earned in different team and individual events ranging from match play, 4 man team best ball, and 2 man best ball events.  Net Skins are also another category that allows players to add points to their monthly points.

Also this year we have added additional “Major” events which will have increased value in scoring for that particular event.  These events will take place in April and July 2016.

Remember only those players who have an Official SCGA or USGA golf index qualify for low net play and compete in Seacoast Christian Golf Club Points System.   Players who participate in our events who do not have an official golf index / handicap, will be assigned a “Flight” depending on their level of play.  These players also may be assigned a course handicap and may participate and qualify for team net play points .  For information on how to obtain an official golf index contact Curtis Chan and visit : Membership and SCGA
