SCORE CARD

– 2025 Championship Finals Match –

Pre Match Notes:

Ted Clinite – a single digit handicap, “A” Flight player.  He has an excellent command of his golf game.  Short game skills he has mastered.  Putting is very sharp and usually a big plus to his golf arsenal.  He has been a top tier player the majority of our golf season on our leaderboard.  He is a tough competitor and is very hungry to defend the Seacoast Cup Trophy as last year’s 2024 Champion.  He knows he has to spot his competitor +14 strokes today, which means he’s got to be on top of his game.

John Casey – is no stranger to the playoffs…as he has been a TOP 20 player these past years.  This past year he has tightend up his game and game plan to win the cup.  He admits there has been a few lucky breaks these past weeks.. which got him here…but nevertheless, golf is full of surprises.  John has put a new driver in his bag which has gained him some confidence off the tee.  If he doesn’t make too many back to back mistakes today, he can be a tough competitior.

Recap :   Ted Clinite vs. John Casey  (+14)

Front Nine – John Casey took the honors off the tee and hit a solid safe shot to find the fairway, but Ted Clinite uncharacteristically pulled his drive left,  which hooked left into the hazard…leaving him to take a drop and a penalty.  This led to a double bogey score for Ted and “gift” hole to John.   On the next hole, Ted buckled down and skillfully got his ball just off the green in two, but John matched Ted’s play with an “up and down”  bogey save and with his “pop” on the hole he was able to TIE the hole to match Ted’s solid “Par” play.   This went on for the next several holes as Ted would play well, but John seemed to keep up with great chip shots, or putts that dropped from distance to match Ted’s play.  By the end of 9 holes, John Casey has a solid 2UP lead.

Back Nine – Ted knew he had to build up some momentum in his game and he fired up a great “birdie” on hole #10….to show John that he meant business.   The match was now within grasp for Ted as he was down 4 several holes ago, and now he was only 1 hole down.   On hole #11, John fought back and scored an amazing “par” / net birdie to out play Ted who missed a 4 footer for par…and then all of a sudden John had a wave of momentum go his way.  Going into the challenging and difficult  hole #12,  John grabbed his opportunity when he saw Ted hit his drive short left,  and launched a long drive down the fairway.   Ted used his hybrid #7 and successfully got to the green for a chance at par.   John missed the green but was able to get his third shot onto the putting surface but desperately needed a 2 putt to save a bogey.   Ted methodically got up and down for his par…but John put his long 50 foot putt just to within 5 feet.  After reading the green carefully, John solidly putted his ball into the cup to save “bogey” and score a net “par” to match Ted’s great play.  Ted could only shake his head as John just put on another great showing to keep up in the match.  Still 2 down, Ted fired up another par on hole #13, but John didn’t get a “pop” on this hole, and his bogey  left him only with a 1 Up lead going into the 14th Par 3 hole.   Carefully planning his shot, Ted placed his short iron shot to the green that landed on the front of the green.   Casey masterfully placed his PW pin high but on the high side of the green.  Due to the hilly green, Ted “chipped” his 2nd shot from the green to get within 7 feet.  John then   Ted almost got out of jail as  his saving par putt  lipped out for a tap in bogey.  John carefully got his putt to stop 2 feet from the cup for a solid par and a WIN to take the match into a 2UP lead.   Going into the final chapter of this match, Ted and John both made some amazing “Up and Down” saves on both par 5s and going into the par 3 #17.   This was Ted’s last chance to pull into the match.  When John sliced his 167 yard  par 3 approach shot to the green, it was undetermined if the ball stayed in play.   Ted placed his shot just 15 feet short of the pin leaving an uphill putt.   When both players approached the green John’s face lit up as he discovered that his ball survived and that he was just 1 foot from falling into the lateral hazard.   With this glimmer of hope, he chipped up onto the green…..and with his “stroke” was able to bogey (net par) the hole.   Ted missed his “birdie” putt and tapped out for par…and again, Ted could only shake his head and extend his hand for a handshake to for a match well played by John .    Casey Wins 2UP

Both players had a great time competing today, but John Casey came out on top and is deserving to become the 2025 Seacoast Cup Champion.  Congratulations !!!

John Casey

  – 2025 Seacoast Cup Champion-

Post Match Interviews:  John Casey  was given the opportunity to speak to the media after the round and he politely explained “I was really not ready to take on Ted today.  I’ve had some good success these past few weeks…but I know Ted is a superior golfer and I had to be on my game and not make too many mistatkes.   When I saw Ted “flounder” on the first hole, I realized that maybe this wasn’t his day.  As the match carried on…I started to feel that I had a great chance to make things happen.  I’m happy to get this far in the playoffs, and then having the opportunity to play Ted for the cup is extra icing on the cake.  I did my best to stay in the moment and play shots that I’m capable to making.   I was able to survive my perils when I missed some shots…but made some great saving shots.   I’m happing to pull this one out today…as I truly am honored to be holding the cup.”

Ted Clinite was found smiling ear to ear when we finally caught up with him to ask him about his thoughts about his win today…“I had a plan today, and didn’t  executed it well.  Anyone playing John and having to give him several strokes  has to bee on top of their game and play their best.  I didn’t par every hole…as that was my plan…but I surely made enough to keep the match tight.  I thought I had a great chance when I got the match to be within ONE.   John played really well and produced shots at times when it counted the most.    John took down several good players  along his way through the playoffs and he proved he was the champion today.   He produced some great shots and saved some criticle “up and downs” which helped his cause.    John was cool all day and deserved this win.  Congratulations to him on his great win today !!”

2025 Championship Consolation Match

(battle for 3rd Place)

Pre Match Note:

Mike Haug – a very seasoned golfer who has working on his game.  He has been dealing with injury over the years, but lately has devoted some time to specific swinging techneiques to get him back on track.  In his younger years, 300+ yard drives were a piece of cake.  Now he has to be more controlled off the tee.  This year Mike has made some strides in lowering his index and he ihas been “playoff ready.”  He’s ran into some tough competition these past weeks…but is ready to press on to prove why he’s a TOP 4 player.

Paul Deveau – has been showing signs of golf greatness… but now has to settle in on the “consolation match.”     He’s refocused his practice to short game skills as he knows it’s all about the short game.  His putting skills are sharp but have been elevated  significantly by  his putter change a few months ago.   Today,  if he takes advantage of his stroke holes, he’ll be contending to the end.

Recap:  Mike Haug  vs. Paul Deveau  (+2)  –

Note:  These 2 players had to schedule their match on another date and venue.  They choose to play “Cross Creek GC – Temecula”

The Front 9 – Both players brought their best game for the day as they both started their day on the range.   Paul took the first hole on a bogey, as Mike seemed a bit tight and flew a few errant balls that resulted in the double bogey on the 1st hole.   But then aby the 4th hole Mike settled into his game plan and by the end #6 he had a 3 up lead.  Paul felt he was a bit tight and couldn’t get a smooth swing off the tee.  But then after losing the 6th hole (a hole he had in his pocket but he missed a crucial putt) he dug deep and scored well the finals holes to only be 1 down going into the back nine.

The Back 9 -Mike  felt a change in momentum and  he took a loss on the on the previous hole…so he took aim and sent his drive long but left of the green.  He successfully got up and down for par, as Paul had to settle for a bogey.    Then on the next hole #11,  Paul had some issues with his drive that came up short on the fairway and he ended up scoring “double bogey” which opened the door for Mike to take a 3 Up lead.  Then Mike zoned in on the next par 3 hole and easlily tapped out for par, while Mike struggled to save bogey.   Paul now found himself in the “match play hole” and he new he had to dig deep to win “one hole at at time.”   But then on hole #13, golf disaster set into Pauls swing and before he knew it he was writing a “snowman” score on his card to give Mike a 5 UP lead.   Paul knew he had a tough road to climb..but before he could regroup, Mike make a par on hole #14 to seal the deal and finish the match …Mike Haug  Wins 6 and 4.

Post Match Interviews:   Paul Deveau was asked as to what happened today on the course….  ”  I was not playing solid golf today, and it seemed like I couldn’t get anything to drop.   I tried to make my share of pars today, but Mike was playing well enough to keep my on my toes… I didn’t take advantage of my opportunities when the door was open.  I didn’t have the “A” game which you need when you get to this deep into the playoffs.  At least I can be proud that I finished 4th in the standings.  I’ll have to take this experience and build on it for next year.  Mike was steady and fierce today… and that’s why he is a winner.

Mike Haug  shared his thoughts on today’s match  “I’ve worked hard on my short game these past few weeks.  I’ve had a few swing lessons which have truly paid off…I’m able to control my ball better off the tee and getting more distance has help me .  This  is a crazy game we all love and hate it.   I know Paul didn’t have his best today, but I had to battle the course to keep the match going in my favor..  I’m grateful for Paul’s great sportsmanship and his competitive spirit.  I’m sure he’ll be back  next year.
