Tee Times and Pairings

We had a great time this past Friday morning.  Nineteen brave golfers ventured out to compete in our “Playoffs Round 2” event to determine who would make it into the TOP 8 for a chance to compete in our Seacoast Cup 2022 Championship.    San Diego County was “blessed” with needed moisture from Hurricane Kay, but by Friday’s tee off time, the “Tropical Storm” was brining on intense storm winds and gusts which provided extra elements which all of players had to deal with both mentally and physically.  Some players came prepared with rain gear and umbrellas, but with continued warm temps, it was a choice to put own the gear or brave the wet elements.  By the time the players got through the front nine, the heavy drops of rain began to pour.  Fortunately there were no reports of physical injury, only mental fatigue and frazzled nerves from 30-50 mph gusts of winds which made it difficult to play.   The sight of large broken tree branches, gusty winds and rain blocking the view from the golf cart, made players think twice if we were really in “Sunny California.”  Only those players who had mental toughness, along with their “A” game were able to come out on top and post low scores.   Today’s competition marks the 2nd Playoff Round of  Match Play  Playoff competition where players and rack up extra points to see who can make it to the Quarter Finals as we take our TOP 8 players.  As of now, any player in the top 24 has a chance to earn “Playoff Points” to improve their chances to making to the end.  After today’s round our TOP 8 will be revealed.

Welcome to the following players who are joining us for the first time this golf season:  Today we welcome Chris Dearnley, who is visiting and playing with us for the first time this golf season.  Chris has been a member of our group, but lives abroad in Costa Rica – Glad you can play a round with us Chris !!

For our events, players are placed in golf “Flights” depending on their golf abilities reflected from their official monthly golf indices.  With that, players will be competing in a few categories.  Within their respective “Flights” players will compete for LOW GROSS scoring.  Then against the entire field of players, each player will score points from NET SCORING against the field.  There are individual points that can be earned from:  “Best Nine” low gross scoring, “NET SKINS” scoring, and “Pin Competition” holes (closest to pin / long drive holes).  All the scores are tallied up each month and players will earn points according what they did that day.

Sneakernomics: Golf and Team Sports Equipment Recap of 2020 Results - The NPD Group

Recap Event 10– With our Tenth golf event  in the books, we had a showing of 19 players who came out to play on a “blustery day.”  The weather was described as “surreal” as we are so spoiled here in San Diego with picture perfect weather.  Today was not the case as our players battled heavy winds and rain.      Conditions were tough and keeping your ball in play was a premium.  If you didn’t find the fairway today, or your ball got caught in the wind and flew into the lateral hazard,  you would be heavily penalized.  Some players in the clubhouse described their day as a day of “golf survival.”

To the Action Today !    John Riggs was one player today who came seriously prepared for today’s competition.  Showing up early to warm up on the range, he also put on  his rain gear,  and proved he could battle the elements and the golf course as he earned 1st place honors in Flight D.  His steady play today also earned his LOW NET 71 honors.  Nice work John !!  John also moved up his standings and with his “match play ” win today, he added 310 points to solidify a #2 deed spot.  Alan Hoekstra demonstrated calmness in the midst of the storm as he posted a low gross 82 and steadily keeping pace in earning a win in his match against Ted Clinite.  Alan did what he could to jump up the leader board with his 280 points today, but he came up a bit short.  Ross Mitchell also played great golf in the storm and posted a 1st place showing in Flight C with a low gross 89 / low net 73.  He also won his match and solidified as the #3 Seed today.   Brian Carter proved that he has taken his game to a new level and won his match against Curtis Chan on the last putt of the match.  Brian played steady and composed during the storm and earned 220 points to take over the #1 seed position.  Way to go Brian !!  Our visitor to our group Chris Dearnley, came out and displayed some “A” game skills today and posted a low gross 82 /  low net 72.  Nicely done Chris !    Our current 2021 Champion, Ebin Smith, barely held on today, but earned enough points to keep himself in the Top 8.  See below to see who made it into the TOP 8.

Other Notables:   This year we have a few changes in who makes the “Playoffs” and plays in our Championship Bracket.  The tournament committee has made a few improvements and has determined that for our two playoff events, ALL players who participate in the field, will have the ability to earn points toward their points totals.  It is only when we get to the 3rd round of our playoffs, will the CUT line be established.  Those players who have sufficient points will to to the next round in the “Championship Bracket.”  All other players will continue to compete, but will compete in the “Player’s Brackets.”

Here’s a chart of the playoff picture:

USGA / GHIN – Membership Responsibilities “POSTING GOLF SCORES” – It is very important for all of us to have a good understanding of “golf handicap” and your “golf index” profile.   One of the elements of golf is the “integrity” of each player taking personal responsibility to post all qualified golf scores within 24 hours of date of play.   Your golf index is calculated daily and it is important to keep your golf profile as current as possible.  Failure to keep it current and NOT POSTING on a timely basis may be grounds for “penalty rounds” to be assessed.   If you have any difficulty or don’t completely understand the process, please visit the USGA learning center that explains via video all the info you need to know about “golf handicapping”

Player’s profiles and golf rounds are all subject be audited by the golf committee.
