Tee Times & Pairings
We had 22 players in the field up for Friday, October 8, 2021. This is the 12th Event of our Seacoast Christian GC season at Twin Oaks GC, San Marcos. Today’s challenge involved an 18 hole challenge which included our fourth of 5 “Playoff” events as we come to the end of our golf season. With the weather turning out a large rain system over inland San Diego, the course offered up a big “soggy” golf challenge for our field. With this, the tournament committee employed the “preferred lies” rule and would allow players to “lift, clean, and place” their balls that were on the fairway or 1st cut of grass next to the greens. Most of the players came prepared with their latest fashionable rain gear and golf umbrellas.

Today’s event involved players being matched up in “Match Play” according to their seeded positions on our regular season leader board. Our top 4 remaining players in the Championship Cup Bracket will square off in the Top 4 Semi Finals Playoff. Today, winners will go on…losers will fall out of Championship contention. Today there would be 400 points earned for players with a WIN match. Those players who are in the “Player’s Bracket” will match up to earn 200 points for a winning match. Tie matches will split the points. Also points would be earned in our normal LOW GROSS / LOW NET / LOW NET Skins , as well as pin competitions.

Match Play Match UPs
Recap : Ted Clinite vs. John Casey (+13) – John Casey got the early 3 UP lead but was only able to hold onto the lead until Ted Clinite slowly chipped away and TIE up the match by hole #8. Both players battled the wet elements, but kept their focuses on not 3 putting the greens. On the back 9 holes, both players kept steady and true to their game plans as neither player was able to take full control and momentum of the match. By the time they got to #16 the match had remained ALL SQUARE. Every time Ted felt he had an edge, John would somehow make a great save and with his +13 strokes today, John was able to keep up with Ted’s steady game. On the Par 3 #17, Ted was able to squeeze out a Par but John missed his putt for a bogey and Ted had the 1Up lead going to the last hole. On #18, both players played their hearts out as Ted had trouble down the right side but was able to save bogey. John skillfully kept his cool and also bogeyed the hole to TIE UP the match. The players were forced to replay #18 as a “sudden death playoff” hole. This is where the level of pressure showed up in both players. Both players got off the tee, but 2nd shots were both sprayed left and right for each player. Ted finally arrived at the hole on his 4th shot, but now he needed a desperate putt to save par from 20 feet away. John got himself into trouble by shooting long near the green and now he had to chip in to save par from 25 feet. John chipped long leaving himself a 15 footer for bogey (net par). Ted took out his putter and decided to get his ball towards the cup from the fringe and skillfully sinks his putt for par. Casey now is forced to make his 15 footer. His putt lips out and he has to settle for double bogey, giving Ted Clinite the WIN in the tie breaker. What an amazing end to a tough match that ended on the 19th hole of competition!
Post Match Interviews: John Casey was so kind to offer a media session before he got into his car…he said…“Today I was feeling great about my game. I somehow always play well in wet conditions. Today was going to be a tough day but with preferred lies rule, as long as I got my ball down the fairway, I felt I’d be able to attack greens. Then knowing that I had 13 strokes to my game I’d have a chance. My goal to play “bogey” golf would be my compass. Unfortunately, it worked well until we ended up in a TIE MATCH and had to play a playoff hole. Going back to #18 totally took me off guard and I felt pressure as I knew it was all on the line. I think the extra pressure got to me…but I did my best to hang in there. In the end, I had to shake the hand of a great player. Ted really is a tough competitor. It was a “GREAT” match and I’m proud of the way I played and hung with Ted. Today our match proved that the USGA / GHIN handicap system does work…a 6 handicapper (Ted) can play competitively with a 19 handicapper. Good Luck Ted…I’ll be back next year !!” It took some time to catch up with Ted as he was resting in the snack bar refreshing himself with a “Dr. Pepper”….”I’m not sure how it all turned out…but I was told I won. It seems kind of a blur to me. John gave me a run today and kept on making great bogey putt saves, and whenever I had a chance to get momentum going, he somehow took it right back. When me made bogey on #18 to again TIE the match, I knew I had to pull out all the stops. But traditionally, hole #18 at Twin Oaks is my “nemisis” hole. I’ve lost many matches over the years on this particular hole. Today I some how pulled it off.
Recap: Johnny Li (+7) vs. Ebin Smith – at the time of their tee off the rain was pouring. Both players had their latest rain gear to play in the elements. Both players were prepared and ready. On the first hole, the water was flowing well, to the point where reports of “streams of river” were flowing through the greens. Ebin took the first hole as he noted he actually used the extra water on the green as a way to slow down his chip to settle near the hole to save par. As the front nine competition went by, both players were able to win and tie holes so by the 10th hole, the match was ALL SQUARE. Then on #11, Ebin got some momentum going and put together a few par holes, while Johnny struggled make bogey and double bogies to open the door for Ebin. On hole #13, Johnny was finally able to make a statement with a par save, reducing Ebin’s lead to only 1 UP. But then Ebin took charge again, by parring out the rest of the holes and by #17, he took the match at 3 and 1. Both players gave it their best, but today, Ebin had the edge in this very tough competitive match.
Post Match Interviews: Johnny was asked as to what happened today on the course…. “I can’t believe my playoff run has come to an end…I have been playing the best golf I’ve ever done in my golf career. Today, the rain came into play and the wet conditions took time to get adjusted to. My hat goes off to Ebin as he skillfully worked his way around the course with amazing shots that danced their way to the cup. He’s a great player and deserved to win today.” Ebin had a big smile on his face as he realized he made it back to the finals. He said…”I knew today’s conditions were going to be tough. I’ve learned these past years that you have to quickly make adjustments to your game that the course throws at you. Today, it was damp and wet. Rather than complaining and griping about it, I used what I could do to my advantage. Knowing that the greens were soft, I adjusted my distances realizing that I could make my ball stop on a dime today. My recent short game practice sessions have served me well and today I came out on top. Johnny really gave me a run today and it could have gone either way especially with today’s conditions. Johnny is a great competitor and I’m sure he’ll be here again next year !”

GREAT SCORING / NET SKINS / PIN COMPETITION WINNERS
Recap Event 12 – Today 22 golfers showed up to play the challenging Twin Oaks Golf Club. The golf committee seriously considered all the weather options for today’s competition, but according to the “local doppler” radar the decision to play golf course was correct. Soon after all the field of golfers had gotten underway, the rain subsided and the course nicely drained so that our “semi finals” competition could continue. Players were able to utilize the “lift, clean, and place” rule. Those who had their “A” game on display today, and those players who were able to get a “WIN” in their match, earned their way to the top of our leader boards.
To the ACTION: Our top 4 seeded players were match up in the Championship Cup Semi Finals. Ted Clinite, John Casey, Johnny Li, and Ebin Smith. (See Above Description of Match)
