COVID 19 – Pandemic – Updated Golf Restrictions
So our golf group has been playing “events” under the COVID 19 conditions since April. By now if you’ve been out playing golf for the past three months, you’d notice that the “pandemic golf restrictions” continue to be modified and somewhat “lifted” each week. Hopefully soon, we’ll be back to our “normal” way of golf. Some noticeable considerations that are still in play are: limited number of golfers in club house, no rakes in bunkers, modified cups so limited to no touching of golf pin sticks. Players are not encouraged to congregate after rounds. At least they are letting players ride two to a golf cart now. But if you feel the need to be totally distanced, you can be accommodated with a single rider cart.
In consideration of our “PLAYOFF Season” Our Seacoast Christian Tournament Golf Club Committee has adopted the following.
Please note the “Bunker” play issue we’ve been using has been modified (you must remain in bunker)
COVID 19 Event Procedures and Protocols:
General Protocols
- a) If you’re not feeling well, please stay home
- b) Wash hands frequently, use sanitizer, and avoid touching your face
- c) Refrain from shaking hands or coming into contact with others onsite
- d) Wear a mask in the pro-shop and in any situation where you can safely social distance yourself from another person.
- BUNKERS /RAKES – Since there are no “sand bunker rakes” being provided by golf courses, the maintenance or quality of the bunker can be in question. Therefore, our club will adopt the following remedy for bunker ruling.
- Bunkers:
- a) Take free relief once by placing the original ball or another ball
- b) Within one club-length of the original spot, not nearer the hole and in the same bunker.
- c) Smooth the sand with your feet, or a club, after hitting their ball out of the bunker
We had 28 players show up for our 11th Event of the Season. This would also be the “Quarter Finals” as we are now in the middle of our playoff season. Today’s challenge involved an 18 hole challenge match play event which marks our third “end of season Playoffs.” This event involved players being matched up in “Match Play” according to their monthly indices and player’s course handicap. Our TOP 8 Quarter Finalist would square off in competition in an attempt to earn 200 points for a match play WIN . Matches that ended in a TIE would have both players awarded 100 points. Player’s who didn’t qualify for the “Championship Bracket” would participate and compete in the “Player’s Bracket” and would have the possibility to earn 150 points for a match play WIN. Also points would be earned in our normal LOW GROSS / LOW NET / LOW NET Skins , as well as pin competitions.
As we near the end of our golf season, our playing format will allow us to determine our “Seacoast Cup Club 2020 Champion.” The player who earns the most points will take home the trophy this year.

GREAT SCORING / NET SKINS / PIN COMPETITION WINNERS
Recap Event 11 – Today 28 golfers showed up to play the beautiful and challenging Rancho Bernardo Inn Resort GC. The early morning tee times (7:00 a) made it more challenging as the majority of our early field players were not able to use the practice range as it didn’t open until 7:30a. Also, due to some unfortunate golf course circumstances, the course was hit a few weeks ago with a few kinds unwanted golf course fungi, which were wiping out some of the fairways. The tournament committee recognized that many parts of the course would be “under repair” and so the “lift / clean/ place” rule was instituted. In our TOP 8 “Championship Bracket” our 8 players would be tested to see who could earning enough points to take one of the TOP 4 positions to move into the “Semi Finals.” Both Ted Clinite (#1) and Kevin Barrett (#2) have padded their season totals to withstand a possible loss as long as they could post a decent low gross / low net score. Players who could make an upset today would be Bruce Dunn / Ebin Smith / Ross Mitchell / Ken Gunn, provided they WIN their matches AND score big points in low gross / low net scoring. Also a few added points in NET Skins and PIN COMPETITION would only help their chances.
To the ACTION: Geofff Baynes pulled off some “playoff magic” and took a big playoff match play WIN over Ken Gunn to earn 200 points. Also his LOW GROSS (87) / LOW NET (66) earned him an additonal 400 points to take him to the top of the leader board to become the #1 seed player. Nice going Geoff!! Bruce Dunn produced an upset match play WIN over our season #1 player Ted Clinite, but Bruce’s late playoff push didn’t earn him enough points to put him into the Top 4. Ross Mitchell also upset our #2 seed, Kevin Barrett in a tough match play battle which went to the final hole. Ross needed to post a very low gross / low net score to get adequate point to make it into the TOP 4, but he came up short by 200 points. Rik Thistle ended Ebin Smith’s Championship Bracket playoff hopes by playing steady golf today. Rik scored a low gross 84 which solidified his TOP 4 spot. In the post match interview room, Ebin admitted that he was playing with a cracked rib and today, his swing was just not there. Ebin said he knew he had his hands full with Rik’s steady golf play today and Ebin admitted that Rik was just too much to handle today. Both Ted Clinite and Kevin Barrett were more than happy that they had earned sufficient points during the regular season to give them that needed cushion to hang in there to get to the Semi Finals.
Congratulations to the winners and those who earned their way to the TOP 4 !!!
For the Championship Bracket here are the TOP 4 players and semi-final match ups:
NEXT EVENT – our next event will be on Friday, October 9, 2020. We are scheduled to play at Twin Oaks GC, San Marcos, CA. This will be a Semi Finals event for those TOP 4 players and also a playoff competitive event for all those who want to participate in the “Player’s Bracket.” All are welcome to come out and participate to enjoy our fun!
The Leader Board is stirring up as we plow deeper into our Seacoast Cup Playoffs. We will continue to play 3 events each month and will have events where players will continue earning points for LOW GROSS and LOW NET scoring along with MATCH PLAY competition. Players will earn points based on event placing and match play WINS or TIES. The points value for MATCH PLAY for our next event will 300 points for a win in our TOP 4 Semi Finals “Championship Bracket.” The remainder of the field will be competing in the “Player’s Bracket” and 150 points will be earned for a WIN and 75 points for a TIE.
Also for the remainder of the year, the value for Low Gross / Low Net placing shall be according to the following “Seacoast Cup Playoff ” points scoring tables:
2020 Seacoast Cup Championship – this is the post season play that will determine our club champion. Starting August 21, 2020, players will participate in “Match Play”and Stroke Low Gross / Low Net play and compete for elevated “Playoff Points.” The more points you earn, the higher up the bracket you’ll be. On September 25, 2020 event, the Top 8 players will match up again in “Match Play” with Seed #1 vs. Seed #8 / Seed #2 vs. Seed #7 etc….At the end of the round….The TOP 4 players in points earnings will continue to the Semi Finals. Those players who don’t make it into the TOP 8 will play in the “Player’s Bracket” and still continue to earn points. This year the focus is on how many points one earns throughout the year and playoffs, determine how deep you can go into becoming The Champion. One may have enough points in their standings to endure a “Loss” in match play and still continue in the competition towards the top spot in becoming the 2020 Seacoast Cup Champion.
